How to pick a console

  1. Pick the games first. Each maker has games you can only play on its consoles, and Nintendo's own games (Mario, Zelda, Pokemon) only come out on Switch.
  2. TV or handheld? PlayStation and Xbox play on a TV only. The Switch 2, Switch and Switch OLED do both. The Switch Lite and Steam Deck OLED are handheld.
  3. Disc or digital? Disc consoles let you buy, sell and borrow used games. Digital-only saves space but every game is a download.

Online play costs extra. PlayStation needs PlayStation Plus, Xbox needs Game Pass Essential or higher and Nintendo needs Nintendo Switch Online for most online multiplayer. Free-to-play games are the usual exception.
