iPhone 14 vs iPhone 15: Is the Upgrade Worth It?
Get the iPhone 15 if you want USB-C and the better camera. Get the 14 if you want the same everyday experience for less.
Buy the iPhone 15 if you want USB-C, the 48MP camera and the Dynamic Island. Buy the iPhone 14 if you just want a great iPhone for less money. Day to day, they feel closer than Apple's marketing suggests.
Quick verdict
- Best overall: iPhone 15. Better camera, brighter screen, USB-C.
- Best value: iPhone 14. Same size, same battery life, lower price.
- Skip both if: you want Apple Intelligence. Neither phone supports it. You need an iPhone 15 Pro or newer.
The short version
The iPhone 15 is the iPhone 14 with three real upgrades: a USB-C port, a 48MP main camera, and the Dynamic Island instead of the notch. The size, weight and battery life are basically the same.
So the question isn't "which is better". The 15 is better. The question is whether those three things are worth the price gap to you.

Camera: the biggest real difference
The iPhone 15's 48MP sensor is the upgrade you'll actually notice. Photos have more detail, and the 2x zoom uses the middle of that big sensor, so zoomed shots look sharp instead of mushy. The 14 only has digital zoom past 1x.
In good light, both take great photos. Indoors and at night, the 15 holds detail better. Portraits are better on the 15 too, since you can turn a normal photo into a portrait after you take it.
If you mostly shoot your friends, food and the odd sunset, the 14 is still very good. If you zoom a lot or care about detail, get the 15.
USB-C vs Lightning
The 15 charges with the same USB-C cable as your laptop, iPad, Android-using friends and most new earbuds. One cable for everything. The 14 still uses Lightning.
Don't expect faster file transfers. The base iPhone 15's port runs at USB 2 speed, same as Lightning. The win is convenience, not speed.
Also handy: the iPhone 15 can charge AirPods or an Apple Watch through the cable.
Screen and Dynamic Island
Both screens are 6.1-inch OLED and both run at 60Hz. Neither has the smooth 120Hz scrolling of the Pro models.
The 15 gets much brighter outdoors (2000 nits vs 1200). In direct sun, that's the difference between reading your map and squinting at it.
The Dynamic Island replaces the notch. It shows timers, music, rides and deliveries in a little pill at the top. It's nice. It won't change your life.
Battery and performance
Battery life is a tie on paper and close to a tie in real use. Both get through a normal day.
The A16 in the 15 is a bit faster, but the A15 in the 14 is still quick for apps, games and video. You won't feel lag on either for everyday use.
On a refurbished phone, battery health matters more than the chip. Ours are tested and batteries below our health threshold get replaced. Premium grade comes with a brand-new battery.
Software updates
Apple usually supports iPhones for six or more years. The 15 came out a year later, so it should get roughly one extra year of updates. If you keep phones for a long time, that's a point for the 15.
Who should buy which

- You want the lowest price on a modern iPhone
- You already own Lightning cables and accessories
- Your photos are mostly casual
- It's a first iPhone or a phone for a teen
Get the iPhone 15 if…
- You want one cable for all your devices
- You zoom, shoot at night, or care about detail

Price range
Refurbished, the iPhone 14 starts at $331.99 and the iPhone 15 starts at $430.99. Higher storage and better grades cost more. Prices on this page update live from our store.
Want the bigger screen? The iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone 15 Plus have 6.7-inch screens and noticeably better battery life.
Should you buy new or refurbished?
Neither phone is sold new by Apple anymore, so refurbished is the smart way to buy either. You get a tested phone with a 1-year warranty for a lot less than a new iPhone. Not sure what the grades mean? Read new vs used vs refurbished.
FAQ
Is the iPhone 15 worth it over the iPhone 14?
Yes if you value USB-C, a better camera with 2x zoom, and a brighter screen. If you don't care about those, the iPhone 14 gives you nearly the same daily experience for less.
Do the iPhone 14 and 15 support Apple Intelligence?
No. Apple Intelligence needs an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or any iPhone 16 or newer.
Is the iPhone 15 the same size as the iPhone 14?
Almost. Both have 6.1-inch screens. The 15 has slightly rounder edges and weighs about the same. Most iPhone 14 cases don't fit the 15 because the camera bump is different.
Which has better battery life?
They're rated the same: up to 20 hours of video playback. In real use, they're very close.
