The short version

Both phones came out in September 2025 and share a lot. Both have a 120Hz ProMotion always-on OLED screen, 3000 nits peak outdoor brightness, a 48MP Fusion main camera with 2x optical-quality zoom, an 18MP Center Stage front camera, Camera Control, the Action button, Apple Intelligence, USB-C at USB 2 speed and IP68. Both start at 256GB.

The iPhone Air is all about design. It is 5.64 mm thin and weighs 165 g, with a titanium frame and a bigger 6.5-inch screen. It uses the faster A19 Pro chip and Apple's C1X modem.

To get that thin, it gives up the ultra wide camera, the second speaker and some battery life. The iPhone 17 has a 48MP ultra wide with macro, stereo speakers and up to 30 hours of video playback against up to 27 hours on the Air.

Design: the reason the Air exists

Pick up an iPhone Air and the first thing you notice is how thin and light it is.

At 5.64 mm and 165 g, it is the thinnest iPhone Apple has made, and it is lighter than the smaller iPhone 17 even though its screen is bigger. It has a titanium frame and Ceramic Shield on both the front and back.

The iPhone 17 is 7.95 mm thick and 177 g with an aluminum frame. It is still slim and light, just not in the same way. If you hate bulky phones or carry yours in a jacket or small bag, the Air is a joy to hold.

Cameras

Both phones have the same 48MP Fusion main camera with a 2x optical-quality zoom and the same 18MP Center Stage front camera.

Main camera photos look the same.

The iPhone 17 adds a 48MP ultra wide that also handles macro shots. That is useful for landscapes, tight rooms, group shots and close-ups of food or flowers. The Air has no ultra wide and cannot do macro. The iPhone 17 can also capture spatial photos and video. If you use the 0.5x lens often, the Air will feel limited.

Battery life and charging

Apple rates the iPhone 17 at up to 30 hours of video playback and the Air at up to 27 hours.

Both will get most people through a day. Heavy users will find the iPhone 17 more forgiving.

Apple sells an iPhone Air MagSafe Battery that clips on the back and raises the Air to up to 40 hours of video playback. It adds weight, which takes away some of the Air's appeal.

Charging is faster on the iPhone 17. It reaches 50% in about 20 minutes with a 40W adapter, against about 30 minutes with a 20W adapter on the Air. Wireless charging goes up to 25W on the 17 and up to 20W on the Air.

Screen, speakers and chip

The Air screen is bigger at 6.5 inches, which is nice for video and reading.

Both screens run at up to 120Hz with an always-on display and reach the same brightness.

Sound is a clear win for the iPhone 17. It has stereo speakers. The Air has a single built-in speaker, so videos and games sound flatter without headphones.

The Air uses the A19 Pro, the same chip family as the 17 Pro, with a 5-core GPU. The iPhone 17 uses the A19 with a 5-core GPU. Both feel fast in everyday use and both run Apple Intelligence. The Air also has more storage options, up to 1TB.

SIM and connectivity

The iPhone Air is eSIM only everywhere, with no SIM tray.

Canadian iPhone 17 models are eSIM only too, so in Canada there is no difference. Both have Apple's N1 wireless chip with Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. All our phones are unlocked.
