How to pack and ship your device for trade-in
Good packing keeps your device in the same condition it left your hands, so your offer stays the same at inspection. You need a small box, padding and packing tape. Here's how to do it.
Before you pack
- Reset it and remove your accounts. Follow how to prepare your device. A locked device can't be paid for.
- Take out your SIM and memory cards.
- Take off the case. A screen protector can stay on.
- Turn it off. A device that's switched off can't wake up or drain in transit.
- Charge it a little if you can. Some charge helps us test it faster.
What to put in the box
| Include | Leave out |
|---|---|
| The device on your quote | SIM cards and memory cards |
| A note with your name and quote reference | Cases, wallets and pop sockets |
| Sealed devices: the original sealed box, unopened | Chargers, cables and earbuds (unless your quote asked for them) |
| Consoles: the console, plus any items your quote lists | Anything that isn't on your quote |
We can't promise to return extras sent by mistake, so keep anything you want.
How to pack it, step by step
- Pick a sturdy box. A small cardboard box works best. Leave about 5 cm of space around the device for padding. Avoid thin envelopes: they bend and crack screens.
- Wrap the device. Use 2 to 3 layers of bubble wrap, or wrap it in packing paper. Tape the wrap closed.
- Fill the gaps. Put padding under, around and on top of the device: bubble wrap, crumpled paper or air pillows.
- Shake test. Close the box and give it a gentle shake. If you feel the device move, add more padding.
- Add your note. Put a slip of paper with your name and quote reference inside the box.
- Seal it. Tape every seam with packing tape in an H pattern. Don't use only masking or clear office tape.
- Cover old labels. If you reuse a box, cover or remove old labels and barcodes so the scanner reads only ours.
Sending more than one device
You can ship every device from one quote in the same box. Wrap each one on its own so they don't touch, and fill the space between them. Use a bigger box if needed so nothing is squeezed.
Sealed, brand new devices
Don't open the box or remove the plastic wrap. Put the sealed retail box inside a shipping box with padding. Never stick the shipping label on the retail box itself.
Is it safe to ship a phone with a battery?
Yes. Phones, tablets, watches and laptops with their lithium battery installed can be shipped within Canada by ground. Keep the battery inside the device and the device turned off.
Don't ship a device with a swollen, leaking or damaged battery. Signs include a screen lifting off the frame, a bulging back or a bent case. Contact us before you send it.
Put the label on and ship it
Stick the prepaid label flat on the largest side of the box, then drop it off at Canada Post. Ship within 10 days of your quote. See how to use your prepaid Canada Post label.
